The network can financially support the attendance at the network workshops of both established algorithmics researchers and PhD students from both the six initial member sites and the wider UK algorithmics community. The funding available is limited to reasonable travel and accommodation costs only, with the amount per person being dependent upon demand and possibly via a first-come, first-served basis. If there is high demand then the funding might only be a contribution towards travel and/or accommodation expenses. There will be no registration fees charged for any of the workshops.
Priority will be given to researchers and PhD students with no funding of their own. Persons claiming financial support will be asked to confirm that there are no other funds available to them, through, for example, existing research grants or from their own department or university, that they might use to attend the event.
The process by which funding can be claimed is as follows:
- persons requesting funding should signal this when registering interest in attending a workshop
- prior to the workshop, individuals will be informed as to how much assistance can be given (this will depend upon demand)
- funds can be claimed after the workshop by supplying appropriate receipts to Professor Iain Stewart, the Principal Investigator, at Durham University.
Interim funding
There will be small amounts available to workshop participants and others within the period subsequent to a workshop and before the following workshop as follows.

- There will be funding available to support a small number of 2-3 day visits by a PhD student to a person or persons at a university different to that of the PhD student or in industry, possibly based upon discussions emanating from the previous workshop event.
- This funding will support travel and at most two nights’ accommodation only, up to a maximum of £300 per visit.
- All algorithms and complexity PhD students are eligible but preference may be given to students who attended the previous AlgoUK workshop.
- There will be funding available to support a small number of visits by an established researcher so as to pursue a collaborative grant proposal with a person or persons in industry or at a different university to that of the researcher, possibly based upon discussions emanating from the previous workshop event.
- This funding will support travel and at most one night’s accommodation only, up to a maximum of £225 per visit.
- All algorithms and complexity researchers are eligible but preference may be given to researchers who attended the previous AlgoUK workshop or whose research ideas involve inter-disciplinary research or research with links in industry.
- Applications for such funding are light-touch can be made to Professor Iain Stewart, the Principal Investigator, at Durham University by e-mail on an ad hoc basis (email details can be found here) subject to the following process.
- Applications can be made at any time but decisions will be made in October 2018 as regards applications submitted before that date.
- If funding still remains, all applications received thereafter will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis with funding awarded until the funds run out.
- Applications are to be via an email and need only:
- briefly outline the proposed research idea (in at most 100 words);
- state the researchers involved, their institutions, and the proposed dates (which should be timely);
- (for established researcher applications but not those from PhD students) state whether there are inter-disciplinary or industrial aspects to the proposed research and if so, what they are; and
- (for established researcher applications but not those from PhD students) state the intended funder to whom a subsequent grant will be submitted.
- Funds can be claimed after the visit by supplying appropriate receipts to Professor Iain Stewart at Durham University.
